According to their LinkedIn page “Blacklight LLC augments in-house marketing and promotional content for entertainment businesses (i.e. concert halls, restaurants, nightclubs, bars) so that they can increase conversion for target customers. Our services range from event promotion consulting to SEO and SEM for client websites”. Founded in 2014, Blacklight has operated solely out of Chicago, Illinois but appears to be looking to expand based on numerous events in the Indianapolis area.
On October 27, Taps and Dolls, a multi-story bar/tavern located on Meridian Street in Downtown Indy, hosted a special Halloween kickoff for Butler University students from 7-11 PM. Tickets were needed to attend the event and started at $5 for Early Bird, before moving up to $10 and even $15 on the day of the event. Blacklight had rented out the first floor of the bar so that those with tickets could come in and have fun for the four-hour period before opening up to the rest of the public. As shown in the picture, Taps and Dolls specials for the night included $2 Bud Lights, $3 Wells, $3 Long Islands, $3 Cannon Blasts, $4 El Jimador, and $5 Jack family.
Festo was invited to the event to do some self-promotion. However, we weren’t the only company setting up Thursday evening. Serpent’s Bite Apple Cider Flavored Whiskey was also getting ready for an event later that weekend at Taps and Dolls. We were fortunate enough to meet an employee of Serpent’s Bite and look forward to building that relationship at future events.
The bar began to fill as the night went on and various costumed guests and even Taps and Dolls employees joined in on the Halloween fun. Taps and Dolls did a great job making sure that the only attendees from 7-11 PM were those who had tickets and were on a list. I managed to talk to many of the 72 Butler students that came to the event and everyone seemed to be having a great time.
I was also able to speak with someone associated with Blacklight. He mentioned they had opted to have the party at Taps and Dolls based on prior success at the location last spring. While this event only had approximately a third of the number of attendees as before, it was still considered successful. Blacklight deemed the Halloween kick-off as another “test event” as they are still considering expanding operations into the Indianapolis market. I was also informed of a Christmas themed event open to both Butler students and others in the Indianapolis area, however a venue has not been confirmed at this point. Stay tuned for further details on the event as it may be promoted on the Festo app.
Overall, Blacklight’s Halloween Kick-off at Taps and Dolls was a great event. The venue was a perfect choice, the Halloween decorations were well done, the event was well attended and well managed, and the nightly specials were a great deal. While the event was great, we believe the decreased attendance is a result of a narrower window of promotion leading up to the event. Festo appreciates that Blacklight allowed us to advertise at the event and highlight them in this blog. We wish them the best of luck as they continue to expand into the Indianapolis market and look forward to working with them in the future.
